Arts & Entertainment – Art, music in natural splendor
Artsfest is an annual arts festival that takes place in a 30-acre public sculpture park – Annmarie Garden in Solomons, by the Chesapeake Bay in Southern Maryland, Sept. 20-21. Festival spotlights juried work of 125 artists. Bands, other performing artists entertain. Art demos, art activities, food. Event started in 1993.
Family Fun – Enjoy Western Maryland nostalgia
Step back in time at 37th annual Boonesborough Days, Sept. 6-7, in Boonesboro’s Shafer Park. Enjoy homemade ice cream while listening to Federal City Brass Band concert. Take a free trolley ride to South Mountain State Park. Sponsored by Boonsboro Historical Society, event features juried craft show, antiques, car show.
Great Outdoors – Island park hosts ‘Coast Day’
Travel to Assateague State Park Sept. 13, for 12th annual Maryland Coast Day – a celebration of the wildlife and natural resources along the state’s shoreline. National Aquarium, Salisbury Zoo, “Scales and Tails” program among exhibitors. Boat rides, kite flying, sand-castle building, nature tours, live music and food. Free admission.
Hidden Gem – Bring your fiddle or mandolin
Join thousands of bluegrass fans and musicians at the 16th annual Fiddlers Convention in Historic Berlin – 15 minutes from Ocean City, Sept. 19-21. Free concerts, open competition with cash prizes, bluegrass and gospel jams. Campgrounds nearby. Lots of art galleries on Main Street, dozens of golf courses in area.
History & Heritage – Living history comes to state
Relive the dramatic moments that led Francis Scott Key to pen the “Star-Spangled Banner” at Baltimore’s Fort McHenry, during Defenders Day Weekend, Sept. 12-14. Re-enactors, parades, bands and fireworks. Then witness a re-enactment of the raging naval battles between British and American forces during War of 1812’s Chesapeake Campaign at Jefferson Patterson Park, Sept. 20-21, in St. Leonard. Sunday morning invasion by British tall ships. Grand Tactical is largest annual 1812 re-enactment in North America.
Spectator Sport – Show jumping in Columbia
Watch top riders – including Olympians from U.S. Equestrian Team – compete at 21st annual $40,000 Columbia Classic Grand Prix, Sept. 20, on Howard Community College campus. Pony rides, exhibitions, food court, children’s events. Event benefits college fund. Raffle prizes include 2009 Mercedes-Benz roadster, sports tickets, golf and spa packages.
