Have vacation time? Want something different for a weekend? Plenty of alluring and vibrant events fill the last full month of summer in Maryland. Lots of seasonal options tied to fishing, boating, grilling – even, jousting. Enjoy a bike ride through the countryside, dance a polka, keep the beat with sounds of bluegrass. Maryland in August is Pretty. Close.
Family Fun – Weekend of hot sauce, seafood
Summer grilling is king at the seventh annual Maryland BBQ Bash in downtown Bel Air, Aug. 8-9. Stroll around this flavorful street festival as 50 teams compete in $10,000 Maryland State BBQ Championship – sanctioned by Kansas City BBQ Society. Also, 28th annual Havre de Grace Seafood Festival, Aug. 9-10 on the waterfront.
Arts & Entertainment – Art along historic streets
Always an attractive town to walk in, the art on display for the Annual Annapolis Art Walk, Aug. 21, makes an evening summertime stroll around Maryland’s historic capital even more enticing. About two dozen galleries within a three-block radius participate. Artist demonstrations, live music and refreshments. Rain or shine.
Spectator Sport – Skipjack race in Tangier Sound
Cross over the bridge into Somerset County’s Deal Island – watermen’s country – for 49th annual Labor Day Skipjack Race & Land Festival, Aug. 31-Sept. 1. Parade, car show on Sunday afternoon, along with live music, arts & crafts, and evening dance. Fishing tournament, blessing of the fleet and featured skipjack race on Monday.
Great Outdoors – Ticket to ride on Eastern Shore
Get an up-close look at the antiques shops, country stores and historic towns in upper Chesapeake Bay country as you pedal along one of four routes in the Ride to See, A Bicycle Tour of Kent County, Aug. 9. Long route includes scenic views of the Bay. Starts in Galena.
Hidden Gem – Free family festival by the Choptank
Musicians galore – rock, country, bluegrass, blues, jazz – on four stages at Caroline Summerfest, Aug. 15-16, in Denton. Jugglers, magicians, acrobats and dancers perform. Juried art exhibits, car show. Billed as alcohol-free, wheel-free and “hassle-free for families who want to do something together but not go broke in the process.”
History & Heritage – Roll out the barrels
Have a hankering for bratwurst or spatzle? Try one of these Bavarian delicacies at 13th annual Augustoberfest, Aug. 23-24, in Hagerstown. Entertainment showcases German culture and folklore. Celebrate Bavarian tradition with a friendly, non-competitive 10K or 5K walk, a volksmarch, on Saturday. Fruhschoppen, or German brunch, on Sunday.
