Governor Launches Maryland Export Initiative
With international trade supporting over 600,000 jobs in Maryland, Governor O’Malley recently launched the Maryland Export Initiative at WTCI's Maryland International Business Leadership Awards to increase export assistance to small businesses, create jobs and leverage the resources of existing federal and nonprofit partners. The Initiative features $5,000 Export MD grants and a new campaign to work with federal partners to educate companies about foreign markets and exporting products. READ MORE.

MD Attracts Two New Energy Co. HQs
Two foreign green companies will soon be calling Maryland home for their US operations, according to the Washington Business Journal. German-based Smart Fuel Cell is moving its North American headquarters from Atlanta to Rockville and is expected to add 25 employees in the next three years. Paris-based power company EDF Group will move its U.S. headquarters to Chevy Chase in the fall. The company signed a 10-year lease for 16,000 square feet and plans to move 16 employees from its DC offices. Complete Story.

Lt. Gov. Brown Leads Israel Trade Mission
Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown visited several Israeli businesses considering opening offices in Maryland and promoted Maryland's international resources and initiatives with Israeli professionals. Trade mission goals included strengthening partnerships forged with Israeli business and government leaders and opening doors to new global opportunities. US Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke

US Secretary Visits Maryland's Shanghai Office
On May 19, US Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke visited Maryland’s foreign office in Shanghai, China, where he participated in a private briefing, press conference and signing ceremony. Sec. Locke led the Obama administration’s first Cabinet-level trade mission, traveling to Hong Kong; Shanghai and Beijing, China; and Jakarta, India. The mission's goal was to advance President's National Export Initiative, which aims to double U.S. exports within five years to support two million American jobs.

Sen. Cardin Addresses Gov's Intl Advisory Council
U.S. Senator Benjamin Cardin addressed the Governor’s International Advisory Council, leading a discussion on pending Free Trade Agreements and other federal issues impacting international business and trade, including the National Export Initiative, the U.S.–China relationship, and the importance of workforce and education in attracting foreign-owned companies to Maryland. The Council, which was created by Governor O’Malley last year, is soliciting input from business leaders as they work to complete a comprehensive strategic plan for international growth. READ MORE.

MD Teams up w/USEAC to Educate on Exporting
Through a new Export Initiative, Maryland will partner with the U.S. Export Assistance Center (USEAC) on a new campaign to educate Maryland companies on how to access foreign markets and develop export markets for their products. To assist in growing Maryland’s exports, Baltimore’s USEAC Director Bill Burwell will join the Governor’s International Advisory Council as an ex-officio member to coordinate the Export Initiative.
