MD Strengthens Business Ties with IndiaGov. O’Malley and the First Lady returned this week from a successful six-day trade mission to India, joined by a delegation of more than 100 business leaders, educators and elected officials. The group made stops in Hyderabad –India’s hub for IT and biotech – and the financial center of Mumbai before wrapping up in the capital of New Delhi. The Governor met with several of India’s top companies to promote Maryland, witnessed more than $60 million in signed business deals and agreed to explore Sister-State relationships with Andhra Pradesh and Maharastra. State Firms Ink Nearly $60M in India Deals While on the state’s India mission, 10 Maryland companies signed agreements with Indian partners valued at nearly $60 million. Deals included a $3.7 million contract for Rockville-based Sheladia Associates to upgrade a section of India’s National Highway, and an agreement between Baltimore’s CyberPoint International and India’s Appin Security Group to jointly develop new enterprise-level security solutions for mobile devices. India-based organic manufacturer and exporter Jasco Nutri Foods also plans to invest $10 million in opening a Maryland facility that could generate up to 100 jobs.. |

ExportMD Helps MD Firms Land Deals in India DBED’s popular ExportMd grant program helped two Maryland firms land sizable deals in India last week as part of the state’s historic trade mission. The program, which provides up to a $10,000 grant for companies to market their products and services overseas, helped Gaithersburg-based Electro-Media Design sign a deal with India’s ITC Hotels to provide design services for the India company’s new and existing hotels, and Premier Rides of Baltimore secure a deal with Adlabs Entertainment of Mumbai to design and manufacture a custom theme park attraction. Expanded Maryland Presence at MEDICA DBED Deputy Secretary Dominick Murray, officials from Johns Hopkins University and more than a dozen Maryland life sciences firms traveled to Germany last month to promote their products and services to more than 130,000 attendees attending MEDICA, the world’s largest forum for in-patient and out-patient medicine. The state provided subsidized exhibit space and ExportMD grants to a number of these firms, enabling them to meet with potential clients and business partners.

UMCP Signs Agreement with Indian College A delegation from the University of Maryland, College Park inked an agreement with the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay to exchange faculty and students for research, teaching and study, and allows the two institutions to jointly compete for research grant opportunities. A Maryland IIT-B research team is already preparing to jointly bid for a $3 million climate/weather prediction grant from NOAA. The UMD team also met with Indian officials to enhance trade in food products and share best practices in food safety training and research.
