Sen. Cardin Addresses Gov's Intl Advisory Council
U.S. Senator Benjamin Cardin addressed the Governor’s International Advisory Council, leading a discussion on pending Free Trade Agreements and other federal issues impacting international business and trade, including the National Export Initiative, the U.S.–China relationship, and the importance of workforce and education in attracting foreign-owned companies to Maryland. The Council, which was created by Governor O’Malley last year, is soliciting input from business leaders as they work to complete a comprehensive strategic plan for international growth.
Maryland is well-positioned for growth in the global market with more than 300 foreign-owned companies from 30 countries calling Maryland home. Roughly 105,000 Marylanders, or 3.5 percent of the workforce, are employed by foreign-owned firms. Since July 1, 2009, Maryland is on track to attract 20 foreign-owned companies, quadruple the number in FY 2008.
