Three international delegations visit MD
DBED continues to successfully engage foreign companies interested in investing in Maryland. Three delegations from China, Canada and Montenegro visited Maryland during March in an effort to develop new business partnerships and opportunities. Governor O'Malley names International Advisory Council
Governor Martin O'Malley recently announced the members of the newly-created Governor's International Advisory Council. Chaired by Harold Adams and comprised of senior government and private-sector executives, the 16-member Council will provide strategic direction to the Governor and DBED on ways to enhance Maryland's global profile. Click here for more information.
Maryland opens India Trade Office
In an effort to ramp up its international outreach, DBED recently reopened a foreign office in India, bringing the State's total number of foreign offices to 11, including seven new foreign offices over the past year. The India office, like Maryland's newest offices in South Korea, Japan, Montenegro, Canada, Brazil and South Africa, will operate on a contingency basis and are a key component of DBED's strategy to cut costs while maintaining the State's expansive international business presence. Catching up with DBED staff
France: Signe Pringle joined officials from the Maryland Energy Commission and the European Region Office at the 2009 European Wind Energy Conference and Exhibition in Marseille, France.  The team discussed President Obama's stimulus package and the North American Wind Energy Market. More than 10 meetings with European companies were conducted and 25 FDI leads generated.

DBED's Bob Walker meets Minister of Education of China Zhou JiChina: On March 20, Brad Gillenwater, along with other DBED staff, helped to organize the Maryland-Suzhou Summit, an FDI generation and Maryland marketing event.  The event attracted over 250 business, government and related decision makers from the two regions, including DBED Secretary Christian Johansson, Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett, China's Ambassador to the US Zhou Wenzhong and Suzhou's senior-most official, Municipality Secretary Wang Rong.

East Asia: To help connect Maryland companies with opportunities around the globe, Cathleen Hamel will lead DBED in partnering with a number of federal and international organizations to host a training session on international procurement opportunities with development banks and organizations on June 9. Turkey/South Africa: In February, Patrick Tonui hosted a Turkish company considering establishing a presence in Maryland. In March, Patrick hosted DBED's new representative in South Africa, Richard Zurba, getting him up to speed on the state's mission to provide assistance to foreign companies interested in establishing operations in Maryland.

Montenegro and Western Balkans:  In March, Igor Evseev welcomed a delegation from Montenegro in response to Director Bob Walker's trip to the country in December 2008. During the visit, a documentary was filmed to promote Maryland's new office in Montenegro and its role in showcasing the State as a global gateway for countries in the Western Balkans. DBED Secretary Johansson, as well as other officials, took part in the film.
