Prof. & Biz Services Add Robust 7,300 Jobs

Maryland gained jobs much faster than the nation, adding 17,200 jobs (not seasonally adjusted) for a 0.9% growth rate over the past year. In contrast, the U.S. added 34,000 jobs for a negligible growth rate. Several sectors [Table 2] supported the state’s superior job growth. Professional and business services employment rose by a robust 1.9% or 7,300 jobs. Within this sector, professional, scientific and technical services added 6,400 jobs or 2.8% — 3rd best in nation.

Other sectors also bolstered state job growth in the past year. Leisure and hospitality service jobs increased by 18,500 or 7.4% — the fastest growth rate in the country. Private educational employment rose by 5,500 over the year for a 7.8% growth rate [Table 2], bolstered by increased higher educational hiring. Health care and social assistance added 5,400 jobs over the past year for a 1.7% growth rate. Within the leisure and hospitality sector, arts, entertainment and recreation added 6,200 jobs for a 14.2% growth rate over the year — tops in the nation.

Several components of professional, scientific and technical services also showed strong growth. Computer systems design and related services added 3,600 jobs for 5.9% growth — fifth best in the country. Management, scientific and technical consulting added 1,300 jobs for 4.0% growth on the year, the second fastest growth rate in the country.
