MD Gains Private Sector Jobs for 5th Cons. Month
Maryland added 3,400 net private jobs in July (seasonally adjusted), for 0.2% monthly growth, twice the national private growth rate [Table 1]. July was the fifth straight month that the state added private jobs. Maryland has added 44,200 private jobs since February, for 2.2% growth, fourth fastest among states. Total job growth in July was held to 500 jobs, largely due to the ending of 3,400 temporary Census jobs. July’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 7.1%, the same as June’s, but significantly lower than February’s 7.7%.
A recent increase in higher education hiring, particularly at Johns Hopkins University, drove a July surge in private educational employment [Figure 1]. Private education jobs rose by 7.8% or 5,600 jobs. The health care sector added 2,600 jobs for a 0.8% rate of job growth. The Mercy Hospital Center in Baltimore and the Johns Hopkins Hospital system around the state increased hiring this summer, partially explaining the increase. Retail trade also added 1,200 jobs during the month.
