Assembly Passes MD Innovation Initiative
Gov. O’Malley’s Maryland Innovation Initiative proposal to create a partnership between the state and its research universities to advance cutting-edge research to the commercial marketplace was passed by the General Assembly. Under the initiative, the state will allocate money to fund start-up grants to researchers best positioned to move their discoveries into the commercial marketplace. Among the qualifying research universities are Johns Hopkins University, Morgan State University, University of Maryland Baltimore, University of Maryland Baltimore County and University of Maryland College Park.

MD Firms Support ‘Cloud’; 2,500 jobs projected
Two companies are enhancing Maryland’s reputation as a major player in the rapidly growing cloud computing industry. Led by CEO Deepak Jain (left), AiNET purchased a former Glen Burnie department store for $1.6 million and will repurpose it as “CyberNAP.” It will be the state’s largest data center, roughly the size of six football fields. Located near Ft. Meade, home of the U.S. Cyber Command and NSA, CyberNAP will offer secure technology environments and plans to create 2,500 jobs. In Rockville, Atlantech Online has added about 10,000 square feet of space by opening its second data center in the state.

State to Host Premier League Soccer Match
Two of the most popular teams in the Barclays Premier League, widely regarded as the most elite soccer league in the world, are coming to Maryland. The Tottenham Hotspur Football Club will play Liverpool in an all-Premier League soccer match on July 28 at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. The match is just one of a number of world-class events supported by the Maryland Office of Sports Marketing, which markets the state’s sports venues. Upcoming events include the Preakness Stakes, Baltimore Grand Prix, US Junior Olympic Sailing Festival and Cal Ripken World Series.

Farmers, Learn It Adding 250+ Jobs in Balt. Co.
Farmers Insurance Group signed a lease for 22,700 SF in Owings Mills at the Red Brook Financial Center, bringing approximately 150 new jobs to the area during the next 12 to 18 months. The company plans to open an operations center in the six-story, 180,000 SF building to house insurance agents, administrative support staff and operations personnel. Also hiring in Baltimore County is Learn It Systems, which is planning to add 100+ educational professionals to staff its services in the Baltimore area. The company currently serves 30,000 children in around 1,500 schools.

VC Consulting Firm Altius Associates Selected
London-based private equity firm Altius Associates was chosen to oversee the selection of private venture capital firms that will make investments in Maryland seed and early-stage companies through the state’s landmark InvestMaryland program. Interested venture capital firms must be certified and need to submit applications by May 1. Last month, through an historic online auction of premium tax credits to insurance companies, the state raised $84 million for InvestMaryland, far exceeding a $70 million goal.

Loyola to Launch Business Accelerator
Loyola University plans to launch a new business accelerator that will create a forum for the University to collaborate with local entrepreneurs interested in creating and building new businesses. The project is a partnership with Wasabi Ventures, a California-based venture capital firm with a presence in Baltimore. Wasabi will provide professional staff to manage the accelerator, funding for start-up companies, internships for Loyola students, and the expertise of entrepreneur-in-residence Thomas “T.K.” Kuegler (left), Wasabi’s co-founder, general partner and a 1994 Loyola graduate.

Montgomery Co. Innovation Network Thrives
Founded in 1999, the Montgomery County Business Innovation Network includes five business incubation centers that offer highly flexible, modern office and lab space and business support services to help young companies realize their potential. Combined, the incubators employ 686 and house a record 156 companies. Since its inception, the Network has worked with 250+ teams of entrepreneurs and graduated about 115 companies that created 2,700 jobs.
