Governor Proposes InvestMaryland to Spur Jobs
Governor O'Malley last week announced InvestMaryland, an expansive administrative and legislative proposal designed to support the growth of the state’s knowledge-based industries by stimulating investment in the Maryland Venture Fund. The Governor unveiled his proposal to business, academic and government leaders at the 2010 State of Tech in the I-270 Corridor conference. The initiative, if approved by the legislature, can spur the creation of thousands of jobs and directly invest $100 million in venture capital to unlock hundreds of millions in economic activity. Chesapeake Bay Candle Opening New Facility
Inspired by the serene beauty of Maryland’s idyllic shoreline, husband-and-wife-team Mei Xu and David Wang started Chesapeake Bay Candle business in their home in Annapolis in 1994. Mei, part of the new "Maryland of Opportunity" transit ad campaign, will establish her first domestic production and distribution facility in Glen Burnie. Their company, Pacific Trade International, has grown to include three international production sites and is a global marketer of products available through retailers including Target, Kohl’s and Pier 1 Imports.

Sec. Johansson Testifies for Fed Small Biz Bill
Maryland Business and Economic Secretary Christian Johansson testified before Congress in support of proposed federal legislation that seeks to unlock credit for small businesses through state-run loan guarantee programs. Under the proposed State Small Business Credit Initiative Act of 2010, participating states and jurisdictions will receive a portion of federal funds to capitalize their loan guarantee programs. Governor O’Malley and Secretary Johansson were instrumental in crafting the federal legislation, which will be reviewed by the House Committee on Rules on June 14. Testimony Video. READ MORE.

Aviation Maintenance School Set to Take Flight
The Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics plans to open a school at Hagerstown Regional Airport early next year to train a local workforce for aviation maintenance technician jobs, according to the Herald-Mail. The program will enroll 25 students in its initial class, with additional groups of 25 to 50 students training every four months. The arrangement will feed the demand for Federal Aviation Administration-certified airframe and powerplant technicians at companies including Sierra Nevada Corp., Northrop Grumman Corp. and AgustaWestland North America, Inc.

Army Alliance Annual Dinner Convenes Businesses and APG
The Army Alliance hosted a dinner June 8 in Bel Air with local business leaders and guests including Governor O'Malley, Congressman Ruppersberger and Ed Thomas, Civilian Deputy to the Commander, second-in-command of CECOM, one of the military commands moving to Aberdeen Proving Ground (APG) from Fort Monmouth. As of May 24, approximately 1,800 Department of Defense jobs have transferred to APG with approximately 1,300 indirect jobs generated in calendar year 2009.
