Governor Launches Major Job Skills Initiative

Governor O’Malley and Lt. Governor Brown last week joined with education and community leaders at Prince George’s Community College to kick off Skills2Compete – Maryland, a major initiative to increase the skills and competitiveness of Maryland’s workforce.  The program will align state agencies, community colleges, local Workforce Investment Boards and apprenticeship programs to meet the growing demand for middle-skill jobs, which are expected to account for four in 10 job openings in Maryland by 2016. $5,000 MD Job Creation Tax Credit Passes Senate
On Feb. 26, the Maryland Senate unanimously passed the Job Creation and Recovery Tax Credit that will give businesses $5,000 for each unemployed Marylander hired this year. Governor O'Malley introduced the bill, a major part of his economic recovery agenda this session, and applauded the Senate's quick bipartisan action. The tax credits are limited to $250,000 per employer with a program cap of $20 million. The bill is still under consideration by the House Ways and Means Committee. READ MORE.

NCI Building $200M HQ at Shady Grove
Maryland will house the nation’s premier center for cancer research with the announcement that the National Cancer Institute is planning to build its consolidated headquarters on Johns Hopkins University’s Montgomery County Campus as part of the Shady Grove Life Sciences Center. The $200 million, 2,100-employee development will consist of a 575,000 square-foot complex with two connected buildings. With a proposed mix of education and academic, private and federal R&D, the cancer institute move will further strengthen Maryland’s bioscience community. READ MORE.

Agency Launches New Interactive Web Site
On March 1, DBED officially launched its redesigned web site, www.choosemaryland.org, to strengthen economic and employment data and enhance the Department’s interactive marketing initiative. The site features a business news channel, MDBizTV, which provides RSS feeds, video and links to breaking news stories on Maryland companies, and links to the latest Maryland business news through social media sites like Twitter, Flicker and Facebook. Two weeks ago, a sneak preview of the site was held at the Emerging Technology Center. READ MORE.

MD Scores U.S. Youth Soccer; Sailing Museum
Maryland will host the U.S. Youth Soccer Region I National Championships in 2013 and 2014. The championships, which will be held in Harford County, will draw between 3,500 and 4,000 players each year, generating an estimated $25 million economic boost and 15,000 room nights for the lodging industry. In other sporting news, the National Sailing Hall of Fame has announced it will construct a 20,000 square-foot museum on a state-owned site at the City Dock in Annapolis. The $30 million attraction could support 95 jobs. READ MORE.
