JohanssonWith the 2009 General Assembly session adjourned for the year, I'd like to take a moment to summarize the budget and legislative issues affecting Maryland's business community. Thanks to strong support from Governor O'Malley, the tireless commitment of our Office of Policy, Planning & Research staff, key legislators, and most importantly, the voices of the business community, we were able to protect several important business incentive programs that help to attract and grow Maryland businesses, create jobs and expand the State's economy. New headquarters coming to Eastern Shore

Last week, Governor Martin O'Malley announced that the National Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee (NJATC) will relocate its headquarters to NJATC logoQueen Anne's County from Tennessee. DBED will issue a $6.8 million private activity bond to assist with NJATC's purchase and build out of their new facility in Stevensville. The non-profit organization is expected to create at least 20 new jobs in Queen Anne's County. Click here for more information.

Life Tech to add 50 new jobs in Frederick

Governor O'Malley recently announced a $250,000 investment in the planned expansion of Life Technologies Corporation, a global biotechnology company. As part of the State's conditional grant, Life Technologies logoLife Technologies will create up to 50 new jobs and retain more than 250 employees currently at their Frederick facility. Building on Governor O'Malley's Bio 2020 initiative, Maryland continues to foster a supportive environment for life sciences companies like Life Technologies to ensure that the State is well positioned for tomorrow's economy. Click here for more information.
Governor announces support for small and minority-owned businesses

In an effort to assist small and minority-owned businesses struggling to access capital, Governor Martin O'Malley announced that the State has approved $410,000 in grants to revolving loan funds in Prince George's and Queen Anne's counties. The grants, made through DBED, will help address one of the most critical concerns in Maryland's economy today - providing much-needed loans to small and minority-owned businesses, helping them to stay afloat and maintain their workforce during these uncertain times.
