MD Strengthens Business Ties with India
Gov. O’Malley and the First Lady returned this week from a successful six-day trade mission to India, joined by a delegation of more than 100 business leaders, educators and elected officials. The group made stops in Hyderabad –India’s hub for IT and biotech – and the financial center of Mumbai before wrapping up in the capital of New Delhi. The Governor met with several of India’s top companies to promote Maryland, witnessed more than $60 million in signed business deals and agreed to explore Sister-State relationships with Andhra Pradesh and Maharastra.
The Governor also signed an agreement with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) – the oldest and largest business organization in India – to create an India-Maryland Center in Maryland to promote trade between the two regions. FICCI officials also announced that the business organization would lead a delegation to Maryland in April 2012 and focus on establishing partnerships in biotechnology, renewable energy and infrastructure. In 2010, India was Maryland’s 12th largest export market with $233 million in goods and services, and the state’s 13th largest import market, with more than $465 million.
