Two
new members named to Public Art commission
Patsy Mote and Lauren Dugas Glover were recently appointed to the Maryland Commission
on Public Art.
Mote, a California native, has been
a lifelong contributor to the arts as an artist, graphic
designer, teacher, program developer and volunteer. She moved
to Maryland in 1998 with her husband, Dan Mote, who had been
selected as president of the University of Maryland. On campus,
she became a spokesperson and supporter of the Clarice Smith
Performing Arts Center. She was also active in fundraising
for the university. In 2002, she was named to the Prince
George’s Art in Public Places panel, and then became its
chair. Mote served on the Maryland State Arts Council, from
2004 to 2009.
Glover is a consultant for public,
private and nonprofit organizations, based in Prince George’s
County. She has been executive director of the Prince George’s
County Art in Public Places Program since 2001. During her
tenure, the program has coordinated 17 public-art installations.
While working on staff at the Arts Council, she helped to
create Maryland’s Public Art Program. She worked with the
legislature earlier this year to remove a sunset clause attached
to the program and to continue its viability. Glover is board
member of the Arts Education in Maryland Schools Alliance.
Though the commission was created
by legislation in 2005, it was inactive until Gov. Martin
O’Malley’s transition team identified it as a key initiative.
The commission held its first meeting in March, 2008. It
is made up of seven publicly-appointed members, four institutional
members and one emeritus member.
