Public invited to celebrate Maryland artists May 14

This year’s 106 Individual Artist Award recipients will be honored at the Baltimore Museum of Art, May 14. More than 800 artists submitted work samples to compete for awards in choreography, crafts, music composition, photography, playwriting, poetry and sculpture.

Seven panels of out-of-state jurors selected 106 artists to receive awards after evaluating each entry through an anonymous judging process. The Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, headquartered in Baltimore, administers the program for the Arts Council.

The reception and presentation at the Baltimore Museum of Art is free and open to the public. To RSVP, e-mail or call the Arts Council, 410-767-6555.

Backas Gallery exhibit extended

The James Backas Gallery features Hand to Frame/Surface to Lens through June 5. (reviewed by the Baltimore City Paper) Symmes Gardner is the curator of the exhibit, which shows the work of Nino Leselidze, Hadieh Shafie, Karen Yasinsky and Jeffrey Kent. Shafie recently received the inaugural Baker Prize of $25,000. The gallery is free and open to the public.

Arts Council awardees selected for Baker Prize

The three winners of the inaugural Mary Sawyers Baker Prize, announced March 25 on Maryland Public Television, are well known to the Maryland State Arts Council and the state’s arts community.

Carl Grubbs, John Ruppert and Hadieh Shafie each received a $25,000 cash award for excellence in the visual or performing arts. Grubbs is a Maryland Traditions award recipient. Ruppert and Shafie have both received Individual Artist Awards. Four of the seven “Baltimore’s Choice Prize” winners – selected by the public – have also received Individual Artist Awards.
