Nine Md, organizations
receive NEA awards

Resources available for artists, arts groups

A variety of organizations offers services, workshops and online seminars for the benefit of artists and arts organizations. Here are nine of them:

Maryland Lawyers for the Arts (MLA) is a nonprofit group that provides lawyer referral service and pro-bono legal assistance to income-eligible artists and arts organizations. MLA also presents educational workshops and seminars that focus on such issues as: copyright, contracts and entity formation.

Maryland Nonprofits, an association of more than 1,700 nonprofits and 400 associate members, offers programs and services that support nonprofit organizations. Workshops address such topics as: starting a nonprofit, lobbying, strategic planning, fiduciary understanding and capacity building.

Center for Arts Management and Technology at Carnegie Mellon (CAMT) partners with nonprofit arts organizations in all artistic disciplines. In addition to  consulting services, the center provides an array of online products – software tools; workshops and seminars; an informational blog and podcast – to help artists and arts managers make more effective use of technology.


Foundation Center is a national authority for organized philanthropy. The center maintains a database of U.S. grantmakers and their grants, and issues a wide range of informational material. It also publishes research on trends in the philanthropy industry and presents free and affordable education programs.

Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation promotes and supports arts programming in Delaware, Washington, D.C., Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Virginia and West Virginia. During its 2008 fiscal year, the foundation administered 750 grants and awarded $2.7 million in grant support.


Americans for the Arts partners with an array of entities and individuals across the country – local, state and national arts organizations; government agencies; business leaders, individual philanthropists; educators; and funders – in order to advance the arts. Among its offerings are: conferences and workshops; research; speakers bureau; economic impact reports; and online seminars.


Arts Education in Maryland Alliance (AEMS) is a statewide partnership dedicated to advancing the arts as a basic component of public education. Funded by the Maryland State Arts Council, AEMS also serves as a resource for local school systems. The group offers workshops and conferences for classroom teachers, arts specialists, teaching artists and administrators.

Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance (GBCA) promotes a cohesive cultural community that strengthens quality of life and economic vitality in the Greater Baltimore region. The group serves arts organizations, coalitions and artists by: coordinating opportunities and connections; providing information and services; presenting seminars, workshops and gatherings; and acting as a unifying element. GBCA also produces Baltimore Fun Guide – an online entertainment calendar for the region’s arts and cultural organizations.

Maryland Citizens for the Arts (MCA) is a statewide arts advocacy group that represents all Maryland artists and arts organizations. In its effort to promote adequate funding for the Maryland State Arts Council, MCA educates state lawmakers about the arts and informs Maryland citizens about how they can support public arts funding.
