In 1983, Brent Crothers moved
full-time into the forest. He had purchased property in
a wooded
section of Harford County four years earlier and had been
busy clearing away the vines and brush that overwhelmed
the property. He even had to build a quarter-mile access

This issue
of Arts
Maryland highlights the strength
of the arts in Maryland and their power to transform,
even in these challenging economic times.
Arts are empowering and represent jobs, both skilled
and creative, and their importance was recognized
by the federal government’s awarding of $50
million to the National Endowment for the
Arts as part of the America Reinvestment and Recovery
Act. These funds will be used to preserve
jobs in the arts, nationally and here in Maryland.

Imagine Maryland
The Arts Council's new strategic-planning initiative, Imagine
Maryland, along with stimulus grants derived from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, are expected to boost participation, patronage, employment and technical assistance

A&E Districts
Among the first states to establish an Arts & Entertainment District program, Maryland now has 18 districts. Directors of these districts met recently in Havre de Grace for their annual meeting to share ideas and accomplishments. The Cumberland A&E
District was saluted for outstanding achievement.

Arts in Education
Maryland continues to advance arts in the classroom. A state champion in the
NEA's Poetry
Out Loud contest was chosen. And, an art exhibit that featured the work of more
than 300 students was staged in the tunnel of the State House. An annual conference
fr arts educators is set for May.

Maryland Artists
Individual Artist Award recipients will be honored in May at a public reception. Three of these artists also received Baker Prize awards. A new exhibit is planned for the Backas Gallery at the Arts Council. And, sculptor Brent Crothers talks about his vision.

Maryland Traditions
The state offers apprenticeship awards and grants to artists who promote traditional
arts and culture. A showcase of these artists is planned for June. Two such artists
are making a jazz CD. Also, the Eastern Shore's Ward
Museum ( see
profile) hosts an annual event that features the best wildfowl art in the
world..

Councilor Profile
Art is an essential element of a flourishing society, says Nilimma Devi,
one of the 17 councilors at the Maryland State Arts Council. “It is not a
peripheral matter. When you’re talking of art, you’re talking of education
– art is education.” For emphasis, she recalls Einstein having said that
his most significant learning came through art. “Art creates plasticity of
thought,” she says.
