State's 1812 bicentennial gets boost in Congress

The state's congressional delegation has actively supported heritage tourism in Maryland during the past month. On March 3, Senators Benjamin L. Cardin and Barbara A. Mikulski introduced a bill that would establish a national Star-Spangled Banner and War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission.

The two senators also worked with Representative C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger to introduce the Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Act in the Senate on March 19. This bill calls for the minting of coins to commemorate the bicentennial of the writing of the National Anthem. Proceeds would fund activities of the Maryland War of 1812 Bicentennial Commission.

Then, on March 25, the House approved the Baltimore National Heritage Area as part of the Senate-approved Omnibus Public Lands Management Act of 2009. The legislation, which President Obama signed into law Monday, could provide up to $10 million to promote Baltimore’s heritage-tourism industry.

The Baltimore Heritage Area is the second of Maryland’s dozen state-certified heritage areas to attain a national designation. The other is the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area, located in Carroll, Frederick and Washington counties.
