ASSEMBLY 2007: A NATIONAL GATHERING HOSTED BY MSAC
The National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (NASAA) is coming to Baltimore to convene ASSEMBLY 2007, a three-day gathering of state arts agency staff, volunteer leaders and colleagues from across the nation, December 6-8, 2007. MSAC will serve as the local host for the event.
Participants will attend sessions, workshops and seminars to examine the role of the arts in a thriving democracy; highlight the essential contributions that the public sector makes to American cultural life; provide essential education, networking and leadership opportunities for state arts agency staff and volunteers; celebrate the 40th anniversaries of the Maryland State Arts Council, NASAA and many other state arts agencies; and set the stage for the next 40 years of the state arts agency movement.
The Maryland State Arts Council has worked with NASAA to feature many Maryland artists and arts venues throughout the 3 day event. The work of Baltimore artist, Richard Cleaver, shown above, was selected as the image for ASSEMBLY 2007 not only for its artistic excellence but for its many connections to the themes of gathering, assembly and integration.

- Transforming Louisiana's Tourism and Cultural Industries
In 2004, Lt Governor Mitch Landrieu and Secretary Angele Davis launched an initiative to transform a traditional government department into a high-performing, accountable and entrepreneurial organization. No one could have predicted the devastating effects of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in August and September 2005 but, it was almost as though the transformation initiative was preparing the Louisiana Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism for the aftermath of these storms. Under the leadership of Secretary Davis, the Louisiana Rebirth Plan, the tourism and cultural industry recovery plan, was designed in September 2005. By 2006, the Department had secured in excess of $50 million in federal, state and private investments to finance the plan. Today, Recovery Scorecard indicators place Louisiana at 74% of pre-storm indicator levels. The tourism and cultural industries have helped to lead the economic recovery of Louisiana.
