Governor
names two new A&E Districts

Annapolis
and Havre de Grace are the newest additions to Maryland’s
Arts and Entertainment (A&E) District program, said
Gov. Martin O’Malley, and Hagerstown has been approved
for expansion and recertification in the program.
Administered
by the Department of Business and Economic Development
(DBED) through the Maryland State Arts Council, the A&E
program provides local and county governments with tax
benefits designed to stimulate economic activity and development
while increasing the number of cultural enterprises in

Maryland
teams with CRUSA at international travel expo

Representatives
of the Maryland Office of Tourism, along with Clarence
Bishop, deputy secretary for the Department of Business
and Economic Development, participated in the Travel Industry
Association (TIA)’s 40th annual International Pow
Wow – a marketplace for generating travel to the
U.S. The event was held last week in Las Vegas.
As part of a Capital Region USA (CRUSA) – Maryland, Virginia, and
Washington, D.C. – joint marketing effort, the Maryland delegation had
45 meetings with tour operators from Belgium, the Netherlands, France,
Germany, China and the Scandinavian countries.

A&E
Districts discussed at MEDA conference

Nearly
300 economic development practitioners from across the state
met in Cambridge, June 1-3, to discuss “Sustaining Maryland’s
Future,” this year’s theme at the annual Maryland
Economic Development Association (MEDA) conference.
Hannah

Film and the Arts, gave an overview of Arts and Entertainment

Marylanders
celebrate Star-Spangled Banner Trail

A
few hundred Marylanders joined a group of Maryland elected
officials in the hot sun Monday at Baltimore’s Fort
McHenry to celebrate the creation of the Star-Spangled
Banner National Historic Trail.

Sportsmen’s
group cites O’Malley for environmental stewardship

Gov.
Martin O’Malley receives the “Sportsmen’s
Best Friend of the Year” award today from the Maryland
Legislative Sportsmen’s Foundation, a partner of
the Maryland Legislative Sportsmen’s Caucus.
The
group is honoring the governor for his leadership and response
to environmental concerns that impact fishing, hunting

Zellweger movie begins Baltimore filming

My
One and Only, a new movie starring Renee Zellweger
(pictured), began
filming Monday in Baltimore County, Chris Kaltenbach
reported yesterday in the (Baltimore) Sun. Kaltenbach,
a Sun arts critic, also reported June 6 in the
newspaper’s Critical
Mass blog: “Shooting in Baltimore, (producer
Aaron) Ryder said ... is proving ‘the best move
we ever made.’” The production will use locations
in Baltimore City and Baltimore County. |
Garrett County responds to fuel costs
Businesses in Garrett County are offering “Fuel
Up On Savings” specials
to entice visitors to the Deep Creek Lake area. Because of its
proximity to major metro areas, the Deep Creek Lake “is
the perfect vacation destination for travelers looking to save
money this summer,” said Sarah Duck, director of marketing
at the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce.
New Pocomoke museum sells Shore art
The Delmarva Discovery Center, “the multimillion-dollar
heritage and hands-on cultural museum opening this summer on
the riverfront in downtown Pocomoke City,” reports The (Salisbury) Daily Times in its online publication, delmarvanow.com,
will sell quality artwork created by Eastern Shore artists at
its Museum Store.
Historical Society collections depict Maryland history
The (Annapolis) Capital spotlighted exhibits at the Maryland
Historical Society in Baltimore that showcase national and
state treasures. These exhibits feature the state’s maritime
heritage, an overview of Maryland history, a retrospective of
Maryland history by prominent artists from the past, and furniture
and toys used by earlier Marylanders. Borders and Boundaries:
The Mason-Dixon Line will be open through June 29, as
part of the Baltimore City Festival of Maps.

Allegany watercolor group celebrates 20th anniversary
The Allegany Arts Council’s Saville
Gallery in Cumberland
presents an exhibit by members of the Western Maryland Watercolor
Society, June 12 through July 13. An opening reception will be
held Sat., June 14, 6-8 p.m. The Council recently moved into
new quarters at 9 N. Centre St. in the heart of Cumberland’s

Carroll gallery shows artistic interpretations of fish
“Go Fish,” a multi-medium exhibit of fish-related artwork,
will be at the Carroll Arts
Center, 91 W. Main St. in Westminster,
June 12 through August 9. The exhibit includes oil paintings,
hand-colored woodblock prints, ceramics, metal sculpture and
more. An opening reception is set for June 12, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
