Play Ball
On February 13, Governor O'Malley announced Board of Public Works approval for a $7 million matching state grant for the design and construction of the new Southern Maryland baseball stadium. The new Waldorf stadium is expected to create at least 230 new jobs and generate an estimated $27 million annually in spending in Charles County. With the home opener scheduled for May 2, I look forward to enjoying some Blue Crabs baseball this summer. |

Governor launches bold workforce development initiatives
On February 11, I joined Governor Martin O'Malley as he hosted a meeting of the P-20 Leadership Council, the last in a series of February events spotlighting the Governor's initiatives to grow Maryland's workforce. The council was established to create an integrated statewide system to better prepare Maryland students for the knowledge-based jobs of the 21st century.
Governor O'Malley discussed the importance of implementing Maryland's Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) curricula and designing a strategic plan to fill the gaps between career and technical education baselines and current needs. I am honored to be a council member and look forward to assisting with the Governor's vision of preparing our children today for the jobs of tomorrow.
The Governor's other workforce events included a trip to the Anne Arundel County Sales and Service Training Center (shown above) to announce the consolidation of adult-education services under DLLR, a visit to St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson to launch a nursing recruitment effort, and attendance at the state's first Workforce Creation Summit at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab. |
HCC unveils new biotech labs
On February 12, I joined state and county officials at Hagerstown Community College to help dedicate the new biotechnology labs addition to the Technical Innovation Center. This impressive 4,000 square-foot facility features 11 private wet labs and one common lab for start-up biotech and life science tenants.
This facility is the cornerstone in building the economy of tomorrow in Washington County. The County Commissioners, the College and the Hagerstown-Washington County Economic Development Commission should be commended for supporting this exciting addition. DBED, TEDCO and Washington County sponsored the project, which broke ground in July 2007. |
Bishop joins Leadership Maryland

Please join me in congratulating Deputy Secretary Clarence Bishop on his recent admission to Leadership Maryland's Class of 2008. As you may know, Leadership Maryland is a very select group of accomplished and engaged leaders who are committed to developing workable solutions to the challenges facing the communities and citizens of Maryland.
One of only 52 leaders selected, Clarence will be networking with some of Maryland's best and brightest corporate and government minds during this eight-month program. I couldn't be more pleased to have DBED represented in this distinguished group and look forward to sharing his experiences during his service to Leadership Maryland.

County Corner
Each month, this new section will provide a randomly selected brief snapshot of our local economic development partners statewide.
Calvert County
Well positioned near the Washington metropolitan area and Patuxent River Naval Air Station, Calvert County is known for its stable, pro-business climate, highly educated resident workforce, and excellent quality of life. The county is home to a variety of well-known companies, including Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Plant, the Dominion Cove Point LNG Terminal, DynCorp and Recorded Books. GlassLock and Directmail.com also call Calvert County home. The county's largest industry sectors are services and energy.
Led by Director Linda Vassallo, the Calvert County Department of Economic Development is working to fill the recently completed Patuxent Business Park (PBP), a corporate business campus with ample green space. A cooperative project between Calvert County, DBED and MEDCO, this 92-acre park is designed to accommodate a variety of uses including Class A office and Flex space. PBP is located just minutes from the Patuxent River Naval Air Station and historic Solomons Island.
Congratulations to Linda and her team in Calvert County. Keep up the good work!
